I understand that any idea and concept is, for some, developed and produced within the scriptwriting process but as demonstrated through my thumbnails and reviewed in my thumbnail posts, writing out a story is not how I explore actions, performances and scenarios creatively. I have always learned new skills, abilities and methods through the use of observation and therefore consider myself a visual learner. As a visual learner I also believe that I am a visual storyteller in the sense that I explore, create and develop a story initially through the use of drawings, scribbles and doodles. For me, the visuals come before any written word is put to paper. It also takes me a considerable amount of time to articulate and to clearly communicate the written word in general, therefore I focus more on how it is communicated rather than its content.
One issue I experienced while writing this script was using pronouns to describe the characters and their actions in their unidentified gender roles. I specifically wanted to describe the characters as not having a gender as I did not want a reader to interpret that it is ONLY men or ONLY women who suffer with this illness. Under this mindset it became apparent after a while that it was becoming increasingly more difficult to write out actions and sequences than originally thought in a way which could be communicated clearly and effectively to the reader hence the reason why I had to relent by allocating both characters with a name and allocating one character with a gender. I asked myself the question, “If I am having trouble writing it, are people going to have difficulty reading and understanding it”? For the purpose of clarity and easy reading to the reader, I therefore referred to Light as 'he', thus having to add a disclaimer to the script.
Writing the script felt more of a formality that I had to adhere to rather than a part of the creative process to further develop this project. I had constructed a story through the thumbnail and animatic process. Upon reflection it did make me take into consideration how to write out actions and the characters within the storyboarding process.
