Once I was happy with the overall structure of the project using my rough thumbnails, animatic and script as a guide, I felt I could then go into Procreate and produce a more detailed storyboard focusing on creating better quality drawings of my thumbnails, i.e. linework and shading. I was also able to note camera shots/ angles for each scene and a brief action/ audio description to make the content more clear to the viewer.

I have never been keen on using the storyboard process as I have found it rather tedious; to spend a certain amount of time on creating a detailed image that may not end up being in the final animation. I tend to spend more time on the visual planning and exploring within the thumbnail process as I have been able to get a potential sequence on paper within a short amount of time, thus arriving at a conclusion as to whether it would complement the project and in doing so not waste valuable time. Once concluded, more information relating to the scene would be added at a later period.

Nevertheless, whether it be due to the fact I have been working on a subject which I am passionate about and therefore feel some obligation to make it the best I am able to, I really enjoyed working on the storyboards on this occasion. It gave me an insight as to what the overall look of the animated project would be and more importantly how long it would take me to complete every single drawing to the standard I wished it to be. Each drawing (line artwork and shading), depending on shot, took roughly five minutes to complete and as for the key poses and camera shots/ angles, I had done all my initial thinking within the thumbnail and script process. The storyboards were therefore relatively easy and, to a certain extent, quite therapeutic to complete.

Example of finalised version of storyboards:

  • Drawing of character/ action.

  • Name of sequence and shot

  • Action description

  • Camera shot description

  • Audio description

  • Sound effects description
