Whenever I start a project I always make a first draft brainstorm map to explore various options. It allows me to take into consideration what the topic should be, which technique to use, what style to do it in, what the duration should be but more importantly how to communicate that topic with an audience. At this point within the project I didn’t want to focus too much on particular details with regards to backgrounds, quantity of characters and sequences/ scenarios to name but a few. I wanted it to be a broad and rough concept so I didn’t immediately limit my options and make rash decisions. To me, the brainstorm map is intended to be a tool for me to reflect on the direction of the project.

Once I completed my first brainstorm map I was then able to review that information, solidifying ideas and concepts thus narrowing down options (my second draft of my brainstorming map). The reasoning behind my decision making was instinctual. It is usually a feeling with regards to knowing which direction a project should take from a story and stylistic perspective, however, even though I’m quite intuitive I did take into consideration from a logical point of view my own limitations, how to solve possible issues and set realistic and achievable goals. The second draft of the brainstorm map is merely a guide and therefore if I were to sway too far from this project I could always refer back to the second draft.

I decided to create a project based on mental health. Mental health is a subject which I feel I have a strong and in-depth understanding and knowledge of due to both my personal and professional experience. Prior to this university course I worked with young individuals of whom had behavioural and emotional needs. I too have experienced mental health issues and as such I, from a personal perspective, understand the challenges a person may face.

I decided to make an animated documentary as I have a strong relationship with that particular genre. I have, both in my personal and professional life, previously created projects about various social and cultural issues and therefore it made sense for me to work in a format in which I am passionate about.

I also noted that the technique which I will be using will be 2D as opposed to stop motion and CGI. I have had previous experience working with stop motion, particularly cut-out and I now wish to challenge myself by creating an animation which is completely hand drawn. I also believe that my style which is both loose and fluid will be an appropriate match from a visual perspective due to its simplicity. It would have been an interesting opportunity to incorporate CGI elements to this project but unfortunately I do not have enough technical experience and knowledge of the software and its principles.
